BeSeen / APMG

APMG-International is an award-winning Examination Institute with head offices in High Wycombe. APMG engaged BeSeen to assist with the design of the User Interface (UI) for their new CDCAT web application. In addition to delivering UI designs, BeSeen provided User Experience (UX) consultancy plus front-end coding expertise.

The Cyber Defence Capability Assessment Tool (CDCAT) offers a comprehensive set of methods for organisations to assess their existing cyber defences, identify any vulnerabilities in their defences and what mitigations can be applied. CDCAT was developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), a trading fund of the MOD.

The Process

BeSeen worked with the small in-house software development team at APMG to design and enhance the web-based User Interface for the CDCAT software tool being engineered. BeSeen’s Technical Director and UX Designer worked closely with the APMG project leader, developers and quality assurance engineer.

A mixture of on-site and remote working was employed to maximise efficiency of the project. Collaboration through Skype aided real-time communication when working remotely. VPN access was granted to the CDCAT development environment so that BeSeen could assist with real-time troubleshooting and bug reporting.

The development team adhered to the Scrum Software Development Methodology (Agile). The design iterations were carried out in parallel with the development team’s sprints.

The Designs

The CDCAT product was engineered to manage a lot of data so the UI needed to be especially flexible and make efficient use of space on screen. Careful consideration was given to many specific design elements which were visualised and scoped out technically to maximise their effectiveness.

The Video

After the initial phase of UI design was completed, BeSeen were commissioned to deliver a high quality, 3D video for use on APMG’s exhibition stand at a Infosec 2015 which saw over 15,000 security industry professionals in attendance. In a matter of only a few weeks, BeSeen delivered the finished result on time to be debuted at the Infosec 2015 conference.

The Results

APMG benefited from several high quality project deliverables. These were delivered quickly and efficiently due to BeSeen’s professional capabilities and flexibility to work both remotely and in-house. Knowledge transference of UI Design and front-end coding best practices also provided added value.

To summarise, BeSeen delivered the following:

  • A re-usable video for APMG to use at future exhibitions
  • Graphical assets which were used for Cyber Security / CDCAT website branding
  • A modern and robust UI for the CDCAT web application
  • Enhanced in-house developer capability due to knowledge transference.

What our client had to say…

“Many thanks for all yours and Renee’s help with the CDCAT animation. We are very pleased with the results!”
